Trenord regional trains run frequently between Como and Milan. There are two Como stations and two Milan terminals:

Como San Giovanni → Milano Centrale

Trenitalia trains. Station is 15 min walk from the lake. Arrives at Milano Centrale — convenient for Malpensa airport connections.

Como Nord Lago → Milano Cadorna

Trenord trains. Station is steps from the lake shore, close to the ferry dock. Arrives at Milano Cadorna — Metro M1 and M2 hub, very central.

Ticket tip: Buy tickets from the machine at the station (€4.60 flat fare). Trenord tickets cannot be purchased online for this route without registering. Regional tickets are valid for 90 minutes from validation — remember to stamp/validate before boarding at the yellow machines on the platform.

Important: validate your ticket!

Unlike high-speed trains, Trenord regional tickets are not seat-assigned and require validation before boarding. The yellow stamping machines are on the platforms and at station entrances. Inspectors are frequent on this route — an unvalidated ticket results in a fine of €50–200 even if you paid.

Private transfer: when it makes sense

Private transfers from Lake Como to Milan are popular for travelers with large luggage, groups of 3–4, or those staying in villa hotels away from the train stations. The journey by car takes 50–70 minutes via the SS340 or A9 motorway — but weekend traffic on summer days can stretch this to 2+ hours.

For solo or pair travelers without heavy luggage, the train almost always wins on price and speed. For families checking out of a lakeside hotel with multiple suitcases, a private transfer at €70–80 split 3–4 ways is often worth it.

Como: tips for the lakeside stay

  • Which Como station? Como Nord Lago is steps from the lake and ferry terminal — better if you're spending time in the town or catching a ferry. Como San Giovanni (Trenitalia) is 15 min from the lake but has more frequent trains.
  • Ferry connections: If you're visiting Bellagio, Varenna, or other lake towns, ferries depart from Como town harbour (near Como Nord Lago station). Buy ferry tickets at the dock.
  • Summer crowds: Como and the lake are extremely popular on summer weekends. If you can, arrive before 10:00 or after 17:00 to avoid the busiest periods on ferries and in the town centre.
  • Avoid driving on summer weekends: The lakeside roads (SS340 and SS583) are single-lane with traffic jams stretching 10+ km on summer Saturdays. The train is significantly faster on those days.
  • Combine with Lecco or Varenna: Trenord trains also run to Lecco (east arm of the lake) and continue to Varenna-Esino, a beautiful village without the tourist crowds of Bellagio.
